NORFOLK HARMERS

Researching since 1978

Recorded in the Doomsday Book is Hermer de Ferrieres (in Normandy) a Norman bearing the Norman French Christian name of Hermer(us) (Here = Army, Mer(US) = Famous). There was one other person of that name mentioned whose hands were cut off by pirates!

Information on the Norfolk family has been gathered now for about 4 years, so in comparison with the Sussex family, work on building up trees is in its infancy. Almost 100 trees have been drawn up, some run to 10 pages or more and HFA is currently at the happy stage of knitting together many of the trees with the intention of a link up to the Norwich tree going back to the 1500's which forms the backbone of the Norfolk Harmer family.

Many in this family were described as "Gentlemen", "Merchants", "Freemen", later to become clothiers, others became physicians and even one Lord Mayor of Norwich. Many of those Harmers living in the outlying villages, often agricultural labourers, bricklayers etc, on whom we are currently working, found rural life hard and left Norfolk for the centres of industry and fishing on the North East Coastline, Hull, Tyneside as well as London and even further afield like Canada and Australia. Eventually it is hoped to publish a Norfolk Harmer Family Tree, meanwhile members with Norfolk origins will be supplied with their line as far back as it currently exists free of charge.
