GLOUCESTERSHIRE HARMERS

Researching since 1978

An early record of Harmer in the Midlands is Heremerus de la Bolde mentioned in the Pipe Rolls of 1176 for Staffordshire, there is also a Hermer mentioned in Gloucestershire in the Doomsday Book.

Co-ordination of Gloucestershire Harmer material also started around four years ago. HFA acquired a tree which had been prepared privately in 1921 for the Gloucestershire family originating in the early 1600's in the village of Randwick from whom the world renowned Harmer Philatelist family derive. Members of that family moved to Norfolk and Suffolk in the 1700's and are not to be confused with the Norfolk Harmer family.

Since that date around 50 trees have been built up emanating in Gloucestershire, some going as far back as the early 1700's. Again, HFA is at the point where research is coming together and headway is being made in linking up the trees and providing a broad picture of the Gloucestershire family. In the 18th and 19th centuries most of the Harmers in this area were connected with the woollen inddustry, as weavers, dyers, etc., others had journalistic tendencies and occupied themselves as newspaper owners and printers, whilst several emigrated to Canada.
