FAMILY ASSOCIATION
(and other variants)
Family History
It is non-profit making, its aims being:-
Since 1978 the HFA has grown considerably, both in terms of membership numbers in the UK and overseas as well as in scope of research which now embraces the Norfolk and Gloucestershire Harmer families. Currently there are approxiamately 180 UK members, 50 in America, 80 in Australia, 12 in Canada and interest is growing in New Zealand.
The Harmer Family Association is one of around 25 One-Name study groups currently in existence. To qualify as such, a Group has to study "one name" and its variants anywhere that it occurs, be properly constituted, issue a newsletter and hold a reunion. HFA is a member of the Guild of One Name Studies. HFA is run by a UK committee of 11, the Annual General Meeting takes place at the Annual Reunion.
HFA subscription is 5 UK pounds annually, renewable on 1st January. All subscriptions and donations are used to pay for printing, postage and research costs, where incurred. HFA produce a quarterly Newsletter in the UK which is circulated without further charge to our entire membership. This keeps members up to date with items of research and also contains articles on family history material supplied by members, including reproductions of old photographs, newspaper articles etc. Everyone is encouraged to contribute at any time. The first reunion was held at Haremere Hall, Sussex in 1978, since when a reunion has been held annually at various locations in Sussex or Surrey. The reunion gives members an opportunity to meet each other, to see various displays of Trees and interesting family history exhibits mounted by the Association. Reunions are also held from time to time by the Australian and American branches.
The College of Heraldry state categorically that there is NO record of any "ARMS" being authorised to a member of the Sussex Harmer Family. Coat of Arms have been granted, however, to certain Norfolk and Gloucestershire Harmers. There are three disticntly different groups of Harmers in England, one in Norfolk, one in Gloucestershire and one in Sussex, however descendants of these families have migrated to all corners of the United Kingdom and many parts of the world. Currently HFA can find no connection between the three families, one theory is that the link could go back to Roman times which would be virtually impossible to prove. There are a number of variations or corruptions of Harmer, such as Harman, Harmar, Harmon (Click to visit the Harmon Genealogical Society), Harmour, Armer etc., some with direct links to our Harmer trees and others not. HFA is interested in all variations and is often able to provide material of assistance to researchers of these names. The Harmer Family Association is always pleased to welcome new members, whether experienced family historians or those recently interested in discovering more about their family roots. We are a friendly Association who have developed a network of world-wide contacts which have resulted in an extensive history of the three Harmer families and in the process brought a lot of interest and pleasure to many. Genealogy is currently a fast growing "hobby" and HFA is at the head of the field.
